At least 21 women have accused Donald Trump of sexual misconduct. Trump is on record bragging about grabbing women inappropriately and without permission. Rep. Chris Smith, R-N.J., should join Democrats in Congress who have recently called for investigations into the allegations of sexual assault and harassment leveled against Trump, and for Trump to resign.
In Smith’s 4th Congressional District, we respect and support women, and our representative in Congress should communicate our basic decency. This should not be a partisan issue. Unfortunately, Smith, a 19-term member of the House who should be a leading voice for decency, has remained silent.
When Trump’s admission of forcibly kissing and groping women originally surfaced, Smith brushed off Trump’s statements by saying the comments from “11 years ago were offensive and demean women and it is important that (Trump) has recognized this and has apologized.”
Smith continued his support of Trump’s candidacy as co-chair of the Pro-Life Coalition for Trump, never acknowledging the survivors Trump has allegedly assaulted and harassed. Only rarely are we presented with second chances in life; Smith can seize this moment to respect and support women and do right by calling for the House Oversight Committee to investigate the allegations of sexual assault and harassment against Trump, and by calling for Trump to resign. Anything less is reason alone to relieve Smith from office in 2018.
