Smith, other Republicans should back Russia inquiry

It is dishonest to attempt to define wide constituencies by the acts of a few in their midst, as Rep. Chris Smith does in his May 22 oped “Activists take dissent in dangerous direction.” Two House Republicans who cherish our democratic traditions are cosponsoring the Protecting Our Democracy Act (H.R. 356) along with 197 Democrats.

The bill would establish a 9/11-style independent commission to investigate the Russian interference in our nation’s 2016 elections for public office. The independent commission would allow for a public airing of the facts surrounding Russian interference into our elections and complement the investigation by Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

Apparently, only two House Republicans care enough to use all of the options at our country’s disposal to determine what exactly happened in our 2016 elections, who to hold accountable and what steps to take to prevent future interference in our democracy’s elections. Smith and the vast majority of the Republicans in the House cannot count themselves among this number, and are therefore complicit in the degradation of our country’s great democratic traditions.
