Smith needs to tell us where he stands

As a member of the House Republican majority with a longstanding history of fighting to protect the dignity and humanity of migrants and refugees, Rep. Smith has been notably silent on all matters related to President Trump’s unconstitutional and, above all, immoral executive order to bar refugees, students and business people from the United States based on their nationality.

It doesn’t take the average New Jersey resident long to trace his or her own family history back to someone who fled poverty or oppression in a foreign land for the opportunities millions hope to find in America. This is a state, and a country, of immigrants, and we expect our elected representatives to carry on and fortify a tradition of welcoming the world’s strivers to our shores.

If those values are to be upheld in today’s political climate, we need people like Chris Smith, a member of the president’s party but, more importantly, a man of faith and conscience, to stand up and speak out.

Our responsibility to our democracy, our history and our decency demand nothing less.
