Rep. Chris Smith re-election should concern all women

Last Election Day, Rep. Chris Smith (R-4th Dist.) was re-elected to represent his district and write laws in Washington, D.C., that reflect our values. Rep. Smith’s voting record on women’s issues is egregious. In 2011, he introduced a bill with language that would have redefined rape to “forcible rape.”

Last year, he voted against equal pay for women and the Violence Against Women Act. Rep. Smith voted to outlaw the birth control pill.

Smith wrote H.R. 7 in 2014, the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act, blocking our pretax money from being used to purchase birth control either through one’s health plan or flex spending money. Rep. Smith’s ideology seems to be that if your pretax money is used for birth control, the government is funding your abortion.

Rep. Smith also advocated for Hobby Lobby in 2014, allowing corporations to deny employees birth control based on the company owners’ religious beliefs. He chairs the congressional pro-life caucus. He leads the war on women from our New Jersey District 4 seat in the House of Representatives. We should be afraid.
